Here is a little video for you to celebrate Halloween with.
An exceptional video by Stefan Nadelman for ‘I Say Fever’, from Ramona Falls’ Intuit, an album I can’t recommend enough. Ramona Falls is the work of Brent Knopf, one third of Menomena, who Nadelman previously worked with on the similarly dark and fantastic video for ‘Evil Bee’ which you can see here.
Nice and creepy with an eerie soundtrack. Brilliant!
Happy Halloween!

Help Kevin Cyr Build CAMPER KART!
There are just five days left to help my buddy and artist Kevin Cyr launch his project to build a Camper Kart through Kickstarter! It all started last year on a trip to Beijing, where Kevin discovered the beauty of a Chinese 3-wheeled flatbed bike. His lifelong interest in RVs and vans led him to create the Camper Bike, a functioning sculptural piece that combines a flatbed bike topped with an American cabover-style camper.
With your help, Kevin hopes to finish the Camper Kart, a mobile unit built into a shopping cart which conveniently accommodates and transports the individual. Check out more information about his and other artists' projects at Kickstarter, a new communal way to support and fund ideas through the web.
If you support Kevin with a pledge of $40 or more on Kickstarter, you'll receive one of his ten artist proofs from his sold out 8"x10" edition of Berry. There are a few more 16"x20" and two 30"x40" prints remaining here.
Dave Eggers 'The Wild Things' with Rachell Sumpter

Cover illustration of The Wild Things by Rachell Sumpter
Rachell Sumpter was chosen to illustrate the cover of The Wild Things by Dave Eggers. The Wild Things is based on the screenplay that Eggers co-wrote with Spike Jonze for the film Where The Wild Things Are, which I finally got to see after months and months of waiting.
20x200 edition prints by Rachell are in dwindling supply. Of her two editions, Grande Finale and Cave Dwellers, only 13 remain!
See more of Rachell's recent illustrations on her site.
Taqwacore - The Birth of Punk Islam
'Three years in the making, this feature documentary follows the progression of the Muslim Punk scene: from its imaginary inception in a novel written by a white-convert named Michael Muhammad Knight to a full-blown, real-life scene of Muslim punk bands and their fans.'
Taqwacore is a genre of punk music dealing with Islam and its culture, originally conceived in Michael Muhammad Knight's fictional novel, The Taqwacores. The name is a portmanteau of hardcore and the Arabic word Taqwa, which is usually translated as "piety" or the quality of being "God-fearing", and thus roughly denotes fear and love of the divine.
I had the awesome opportunity to go see this film last week and it pretty much left me speechless. If it comes to a theater near you please go check it out.
'When he was 17, Michael Knight left his mother’s home in Rochester to study Islam at a Pakistani madrassa. It was his first act of rebellion – against his abusive, schizophrenic, white-supremacist father. Years later, burned out on the demands of religious dogma, Mike rebelled once more – by penning a Muslim Punk manifesto called The Taqwacores. His work of fiction struck a chord with young Muslims around the world and before long, real-life Taqwacore bands were creating a scene. This film follows Michael and his band of Muslim punks as they journey across the U.S. and Pakistan, transforming their worlds, their religion and themselves through the spirit of Taqwacore.'
There is even a Taqwacore webzine - taqwacore.wordpress.com
Beer, Bikes and Bagels....
These three things have been following me around a lot lately.
Beer and bikes have been present for quite a while but the latest addition is Bagels.
I have always been a fan of bagels but since moving to NYC, my eyes really have been opened up to the delicious competitive world of the boiled doughnut shaped bread.
Back home in Brisbane fresh bagels are hard to come by. Packaged bagels from the local Coles is about as good as it gets. Oh how terribly wrong I was!
I have been traveling around quite a bit recently and have made it a project to document the Bagels from that area. NYC claims that it is the quality of their water that makes theirs the best in the world. Brick Lane Bagels in London also claim that they are best. While Montreal has 2 24hr bagels stores within blocks from each other that pump out hot fresh bagels all day and all night.
The sweet combination of Beer, Bikes and Bagels is often the cause of me trying to charm the lovely lady at Fairmount Bagels in the early hours of the morning so she will give me her freshest hottest bagels straight out of the oven. We are now on first name basis!
I still have a bit more research to do and a few more Bagels to try but stay tuned to hear who actually has the 'BEST BAGELS'.

WaHS on Twitter
Ok so I did it. I know I have broken many promises in doing so but the 'www' got the better of me. I now have an account with twitter. Mainly just to be used for strange and wonderful things that I find around me, so don't get too excited about the quality of the content.

Julie Doiron and Herman Dune – Last Night @ Ukrainian Federation
- Last night I grabbed the camera and rode up the street to cover Julie Doiron and Herman Dune for music blog Corner Street Studios.
- I really didnt know what to expect. It was a very last minute job and only just made it to the venue in time. I finally composed myself and started shooting but then was completely blown away by the music that was being produced.
- These 3 artists had the crowd completely captivated through the whole performance.
- It was a beautiful intimate experience and I'm so glad that I had the opportunity to attend.
- The review and photos will be posted on Corner Shop Studios in a few days.
- Stop by and check it out....

Limewire and The Scene have put together a compilation of seventeen Nashville bands and are offering it as a free download to all who are interested. If you are familiar with the bands, spread the word and get someone into it who may not know the bands. If you are unfamiliar with the bands, I can wholeheartedly endorse 90% of the tracks included as worthy of regular rotation.

Pretty simple really, wonder why no one’s ever thought of it before. I mean, the place is pretty decadent for a religion based on humility and modesty…
Alvin Band

Introducing Alvin Band.... If you like Animal Collective the you are going to like Alvin Band.
Alvin Band sound so much like Animal Collective thats its almost criminal.. but in saying that I like Animal Collective and therefore I like Alvin Band.
Rick Schaier is the founder and sole member of Alvin Band, a creative project in which all sounds are created without the use of instruments. Schaier began recording his vocal compositions in early 2008, while he and the rest of Miniature Tigers set to work on their debut album. When he's not holed up in the studio, the musician would take a microphone and a laptop computer into his friend's bathroom, where he drew upon the influence of Bjork's Med·lla while creating songs with his vocals and body slaps.
The Southern-California-based, twenty-one-year-old has just released Mantis Preying, the first 'official' release by Alvin Band that also includes a limited edition bonus six song EP from an earlier bedroom recording that has come to be known as Lady Portrait.
Check out the Myspace page here and give it a listen.

Contributor....

As part of POP Montreal, a festival celebrating Music, Art and Film, I was able to check out the 'Off The Hook' Exhibition linked to Contributor. I was BLOWN away by the amazing pieces that these artists had turned a humble skateboard into.
It did remind me somewhat of Brisbane show "I Used to Skate Once" but what I really grabbed me about Contributor is that it is a charity for raising money to buy underprivileged children Skateboards across Canada. Watch the video below to get a better understanding of the cause and inspiration and maybe jump on the site and bid for a board yourself.
I know I HAVE!
Building skateboards in the backyard was something I used to do a lot when I was a little mite and thrill of flying down Bartleys Hill was something that could NOT be compared.
I wish I had some photos of those boards....
Contributor is a traveling art show created by Mike Giles of Furni and Annie Lam, along with the help of Bob Kronbauer. Together they’ve gathered a huge crop of artists to decorate and design skateboards which will then be auctioned off to the highest bidder. With the money they raised plan on donating 100 skateboards to kids in need across Canada. It’s a really interesting way to help out kids, especially for those whose skating is their main outlet in the world, though they may not have the cash, because skateboarding is not a cheap hobby.
The line-up of artists looks great as well, including Thomas Campbell, Parra, Matt Irving, UPSO, Jim Houser, Mike Perry, Todd Francis, Chris Pastras, Craig Metzger, Andy Jenkins, Nial McClelland, Supermundane, Jim Datz, Rita, Travis Millard, Mel Kadel and a ton more.

Modest Mouse new Music Video

I absolutely love Modest Mouse's new EP No One's First and You're Next.
And I also am head over hells with their 'Whale Song'. So I guess you could expect my absolute total delight to see such an awesome music video to go with it!
Its dark, creepy and EVEN includes disembowelment! Way to kick a goal in my book!
Director Nando Costa made the six-minute opus with assistance from the Portland production company Bent Image Lab. The effects-crammed video follows what happens after Isaac Brock uses a medieval-looking weaving contraption to conjure images of giant snails and plants that play the drums. It's an epically weird piece of work, and it could turn out to be Modest Mouse's very own "Black Hole Sun".
Bent Image Lab is a master with the visual effects! They have also done music videos for TV on the Radio, They Might Be Giants and the New song from Ash - True Love 1980.

Iri5 Cassette Portraits

Fantastic stencil / marker-pen-style portraits, but created by gluing down strips of cassette tape. Artist is Iri5. Check out the full set on his Flickr.
Know Hope new Outdoor show.
I first noticed Know Hope when I was living in Brooklyn and he had just attacked the streets with his signature style. Now I try to keep up with what he gets up too. I was so happy to find these images of his lastest show Kindred Times and Future Goodbyes with Foma <3, Klone and Zero Cents. Such an awesome collaboration of artists!
New..... Bulit to Spill - There is No Enemy

Introducing... Broken Bells.

I'm a big Shins fan, and I think their production value increases significantly with each album.
The Shins lineup has changed quite a bit recently, with keyboardist Marty Crandall and drummer Jesse Sandoval leaving the band. They've been replaced by Ron Lewis (bass, Fruit Bats) and Joe Plummer (drummer, Modest Mouse). The Shins also made a label switch from Sub Pop to Aural Apothecary, Mercer's label.
Should be really interesting to hear the mix of James and Danger Mouse.
Personally, I can't wait for this collaboration to come into fruition with their first record. I hope it's as explosive as I'm expecting!
Punch Camera = Crazy....

| The Punch Camera by designer Matty Martin. Cool! The PUNCH takes regular digital images but allows its users to physically punch a rasterized image of their photo. The punched image gives information which can connect its users to the digital gallery. "This is a camera which was inspired by the loss of tangible memories. It is meant to connect both physical and digital while minimizing excess materials and the hardships in sharing images." |

Let the Right One In
Following along the Vampire line that has been so prominent since the television world has been blessed with True Blood, I recently have been introduced to the movie 'Let the Right One In'. A Swedish film made in 2008 and currently winning awards all over the world, this Beautiful love story, great horror movie and sweet children's tale definitely needs to be on your 'must see' list.
The Swedes have always been well known for their clean, fresh design work and this film is proof that it continues throughout their film work. It is beautifully shot and brilliantly edited as you watch a young boys love story mix with scenes that nightmares are made of.
Director, Tomas Alfredson and writer, John Ajvide Lindqvist really did an amazing job!
Here are some screen shots I captured that really took my breath away....
Speaking of breath... I didnt think Vampires had breath but they do in this film.
Is that a slip up of the director or are my Vampire facts mixed up?.....
