This Charming Man
This Charming Man is Ed Janssen. He works in his Melbourne studio surrounded with bits and pieces of metal, string, wax, and tools. He's an avid collector of old watches, Masonic jewelry, religious icons, war memorabilia which stems from a lifetime fascinated with accessories which once meant something to someone. This Sailor Ring is one of my favorite pieces!
When he started his label, This Charming Man, in late 2005, he began with a modest range of “edible” charms-- miniature bagels and sandwiches complete with custom toppings, culminating with his “knuckle sandwich”, two pieces of bread surrounding tiny brass knuckles, which achieved cult status almost immediately.
While Ed’s formal training in gold and silversmithing at RMIT fostered practical skills, Ed’s talent is preternatural. It is the way he looks at the world around him which is the best indication of how he approaches jewellery. From the edible range quickly sprouted pieces that reflect young, subversive culture, seen in the “love and pain” ranges, the two-fingered rings, the humorous mini bear traps, and now, a new range inspired by icons of secret societies.Im a big fan of Ed's work and can't wait to see more of it around.
