Pedal powered mower....

Owning a home in Portland, OR is far different from living in a shoe box in mid-town Manhattan. This is the time of year when I am sure lawn mower sales pick up and wouldn’t it be great to mix mowing the lawn with love of bikes? Well, some creative types have come up with some options out there.

If I’m not mistaken, the pedaling accomplishes two purposes here. One is to move forward, the other is to spin the blade. It comes via CHAUSS513’s photostream on Flickr.

What scares me...

If you didn’t think you could be moved by garbage, you need to take a look at these astounding images of extreme litter around the world. While the colors are beautiful, vivid and make for wonderful visual stimulation, the sad reality of life they capture is truly heart breaking.
I don't understand how we can sit back and let this happen. What is the quality of life???....

New Bloc Party film clip....

Hey all, Sorry I have been so slow in adding new things to this blog. Im currently working my toosh off in the land of web design.

Here is Bloc Party's new clip for “Ares (Villain remix)”. The band decided to go against the traditional music video format and instead chose to use fan-filmed videos.

The videos are primarily from mobile phones and do not have the same high quality as regular videos, but the format provides an authentic concert feel. It may make some watchers a bit seasick, but all in all, this format is a great concept.

Bloc Party knows how to keep fans interested, and this new release is no exception.

Basking sharks!!

basking-shark

After half a century of searching, scientists have finally discovered what happens to the world’s second largest shark every winter: It has a Caribbean hideout.

Basking sharks, which can grow up to 33 feet long and weigh more than a Hummer H1, spend the late spring, summer and early fall in the temperate regions of the world’s oceans. But then they pull their great disappearing act, eluding scientists throughout the winter months.

Plus, additional visuals by Arthur Jones, and a very special appearance by Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer!

The song in this video is "Eugene" by Andrew Bird. Animation by John Kuramoto. Permission to post this video has been granted by the contributors.

FEAST! Such a great idea...

Funding Emerging Arts with Sustainable Tactics (FEAST) is an ingenious project. It seamlessly combines the joys of art and food by hosting public dinners designed to raise money for artistic projects. It's run by a group of individuals sharing a vortex of skills and is hosted by The Lutheran Church of the Messiah across the street from McGolrick Park.

Basically, you pay a sliding scale fee to enter, eat some amazing food prepared by Molly and David, and vote on a number of submitted proposals by artists working in a variety of creative disciplines. At the end of the evening the votes and monies are counted and the artist with the most votes receives the bag of cash. The proposal is to be realized by at the next FEAST event.

Next event is this saturday 9th of May starting around 6pm.

Pay the fee, eat some delicious food and help local artists put their ideas into fruition!

You can join their facebook group here, listen to the wnyc coverage here, see pictures from the event here.

I think every city should adopt this!...

Maine... OK!

Maine Legislature Okays Gay Marriage

Gay marriage passed in Maine legislature

Today the state of Maine Legislature gave their approval of gay marriage. Although there were enough votes to pass the measure, there were not enough to override the "undecided" Gov. John Baldacci, who has 10 days to take action on the bill, if he chooses to veto. However, if he signs it into law, Maine would join Massachusetts, Iowa, Connecticut and Vermont.

The decision of California's Prop 8 still is in the hands of the state's supreme court. Chatter among Prop 8 internet groups suggest that the announcement is either coming tomorrow or next Monday.

UPDATE: Governor John Baldacci signed the bill into law.

Bamboo Bike Studio

bamboo-bikes-2.jpg

If Robinson Crusoe were to have a bike, today he would have made it at Bamboo Bikes Studio. The weekend workshop allows you to build your own bamboo dream bike, helping out Mother Nature while kitting yourself out with a sustainable, one-of-a-kind bicycle.

Bamboo Bikes' mission is pretty simple. Their goal is to provide cyclists the experience of building their own ride from scratch, while also advancing sustainable development by financing bamboo bike factories in Africa and South America. The project provides real and long-term economic inputs while delivering an affordable, socially beneficial product back to their own communities.

Blockbuster drop box oven bakes delicious cakes!

It's simple and ingenious: A coal pit rests at the bottom, with the cakes and pans resting on fridge trays inside. The box's back door is the oven door, and the whole thing is sealed with wet cloths. The cake it produced is quote, "fabulous."

Can anyone explain how the hell it got to Liberia?

Jeff Desom film for Hauschka's Morgenrot!

Dreamlike video by young filmmaker Jeff Desom for Hauschka's Morgenrot, from his new album Ferndorf (FatCat Records):

Film by Jeff Desom
Music by Hauschka

Taken from sepia images of early 20th century New York, Jeff Desom on making the video:

“The finished animation is mostly made from early twentieth century photographs that I found while browsing through the vast collection of the U.S. Library of Congress. I also used old postcards from New York that I purchased at a flea market in Paris. Most of the time I would only zoom into a tiny portion of the picture and utilise that as my frame.

“The hardest part was to make it look as if it had been pasted together from a lost reel depicting this curious experiment where they’d lightened up a piano and thrown it off a building only to see what would happen. The kind of unnecessary crash test executed under the sole purpose of drooling over the beauty of slow motion.”
